Bachchan 'to discuss' Tamil protest
Amitabh Bachchan
Mr. Bachchan says he has no intention to hurt sentiments of Tamils
Indian film legend Amitabh Bachchan has promised to discuss the concerns raised by Tamil protesters against his visit to Sri Lanka as the chief guest for India International Films Awards (IIFA), to be held in Colombo.

Writing in his blog, Mr. Bachchan has said that he had no intention to hurt sentiments of Tamils.

The film star has made the remarks after a Tamil group protested his involvement in IIFA.

"We urge him not to attend the function in Colombo as a symbol of solidarity for the Tamilian cause in Sri Lanka. Tamils have been subject to atrocities and war crimes perpetrated by the Mahinda Rajapaksa government in that country," C. Rajendran, spokesperson for the protesters was quoted by the IANS.

Mr. Bachchan who visited Sri Lanka last week launched the festival to be held in June.

“A Tamil Group picketed my houses this morning, asking me to not conduct IIFA in Sri Lanka !! I beckoned personnel from Wiz who own and conduct IIFA to come and meet me to discus this matter and give it due importance," Bachchan has written on his blog.

He said the IIFA governing body “would meet immediately” to discuss the matter raised by the Tamil protesters.

“Sentiments of all must be respected and I hope that we can plan and execute that with understanding peace and grace,” Bacchachan said in his blog.
