Court releases Fonseka supporters
Hotel stand off
Soldiers surrounded the hotel where Gen Sarath Fonseka was staying on the 27th of January
Courts in Sri Lanka ordered the release of retired servicemen arrested on an alleged conspiracy with the former military chief against the government.

Colombo Magistrate Champa Janaki Rajaratna on Wednesday ordered the release of fourteen ex military officers who were arrested at the conclusion of the presidential election.

They were taken into custody from Cinnamon Lakeside hotel, where the defeated candidate Sarath Fonseka was staying with his supporters.

Sri Lanka's military stationed troops outside the hotel before moving in to make the arrests on the 27th of January.

Police Criminal Investigation Department informed courts on Wednesday that they could not uncover evidence to prove charges on conspiracy against Gen. Fonseka's supporters.

Meanwhile, police informed courts that a statement on alleged arms deals was recorded from the former military chief in custody.
