Concern over missing journalist
Prageeth Ekneligoda
Ekneligoda has been supporting Gen Fonseka's campaign
International media watchdogs have urged Sri Lanka authorities to do more to find a missing journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, who is missing since Sunday.

Paris based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) say the political analyst at LankaeNews website who is also a veteran cartoonist has left work late Sunday night but is yet to return home.

The journalist who was previously abducted and kept for a few hours has supported main opposition candidate, Gen Sarath Fonseka's campaign, his colleagues told BBC Sandeshaya.

"Given the current political tension, it is extremely worrying that journalist known for criticising the government should disappear in the capital," Reporters Without Borders said.

"With rumours of premeditated violence against journalists circulating, we expect a rapid response from the authorities designed to find Ekneligoda safe and sound," the RSF said in a statement.

Mrs. Ekneligoda has lodged complaints with the police into his disappearance.

Addressing a press conference in Colombo together with a group of professionals, Mrs. Ekneligoda appealed to the abductors to release "not the person in the name of Prageeth but the father of my two children" .

She has expressed disappointment over the conduct of the police when she tried to lodge a complaint.

A fellow journalist has told RSF that Prageeth Ekneligoda has been threatened before due to his analyses.

"Last week he wrote a long comparative analysis of the two main candidates for the presidential election that was published in Sinhalese on the Lankaenews site. He sided with the opposition. We fear that his disappearance is linked to that article," RSF quoted.
