Presidential candidate, General Sarath Fonseka launching his election manifesto has pledged to restore democracy and win peace in the country. He is contending as the main opposition candidate against his former commander-in-chief, President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the forthcoming election. Ten point manifesto The ten point manifesto launched on Thursday in Colombo does not include any reference to the executive presidency, which he has already said would be abolished immediately after his election.
However addressing the launching ceremony, he said he would abolish the executive presidency, the press council and replace it with a freedom of information bill. Gen Fonseka said that the executive presidency has ruined democracy in the country and let peoples’ lives in danger. “Executive presidency is heading towards totalitarianism”, he said. Gen.Fonseka said that he would eliminate corruption and help families increasing incomes and lowering taxes and the cost of living. Defection At the launching ceremony on Thursday, the Deputy Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, M.S.Sellasamy defecting from the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance said that he would extend his support to Gen.
