Courts was informed that the AG (Attorney general) would not oppose to a bail application made by journalist JS Tissainayagam who has been sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment under anti terrorism laws.
The Supreme courts on Wednesday ordered the registrar to fix a date to further consider the bale application.

Tissainayagam , the first journalist in Sri Lanka to be convicted under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) has requested to be released on bail.

Journalist Tissainayagam who has spent over hundred days in prison was accused of causing ill-will among ethnic communities, and that he had raised money to fund 'terrorist' activities.

The conviction mainly based on a confession obtained while Tissainayagam was in custody has been contested by his defence.
Tissainayagam reported of the army of withholding food and other supplies from areas populated by Sri Lanka’s minority Tamil population as a tool of war.

The Government said that the allegations were false and aimed at sparking communal unrest.

Many human rights organization around the world have condemned the trial as well as the sentencing of Tissanayagam.

Amnesty International, has said that Tissainayagam is a “prisoner of conscience”.
