Police say they are still waiting for AG's instructions

Lawyers representing IT student Nipuna Ramanayake, who was adducted and assaulted allegedly by police officers and family members of a senoor police officer, made the accusations as the case was taken for hearing by the Kaduwela magistrate.

The lawyers also accused the police of deliberately not naming Senior Superintendant of Police (SSP) Vaas Gunawardene, whose wife and son are named as suspects.

Bail granted

Counsel Hemapala Ekanayake, a member of the team representing the interests of the victim, told BBC Sandeshaya that courts were informed by the police that they are still waiting for instructions by the Attorney General.

The court noted that it is unable to make an order in naming the SSP as a suspect until it receives AG's instructions Victim's counsel

The victim's counsellors have also accused the police of failing to arrest Inspector of Police (IP) Amal Keerthi, another suspect in the case.

The Avissawella High Court granted bail to all the suspects, SSP Gunawardene's son, wife and eight police officers, on Monday.

The suspects were ordered against threatening witnesses.

The hearing was postponed until 11 November.
