The most senior Sri Lankan government official in Vavuniya says that the leader of the visiting Tamil Nadu parliamentary delegation insulted her.

Vavuniya Government Agent PSM Charles told BBC Tamil service that TR Baalu, MP, insulted her in front of other Sri Lankan officials.

The visiting delegation has met President Mahinda Rajapaksa and PM Rathnasiri Wickramanayake on Tuesday in Colombo.

They have visited camps for displaced Tamil people during the weekend and on their return the team has asked Ms. Charles whether they could visit vocational training centres and farming facilities.

When I queried from my officials whether the bus could be turned, Mr. Baalu questioned me ‘who are you?, Are you in the delegation?, You are trying to deviate your limit’ and he used very harsh words

“When I queried from my officials whether the bus could be turned, Mr. Baalu questioned me ‘who are you?, Are you in the delegation?, You are trying to deviate your limit’ and he used very harsh words,” she said.

The GA said she is yet to inform the incident to higher authorities.

The Tamil Nadu ruling party parliamentary delegation is visiting Sri Lanka on the invitation of Sri Lanka government.

“But Kanimozhi, MP, and others apologised to me,” said Ms. Charles.

Ms. Kanimozhi is the daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Muthuvel Karunanidhi.

The BBC could not contact Mr. Baalu despite repeated attempts.

Mano Ganeshan, MP
Mr. Ganeshan says the team is not a multi-party parliamentary delegation

Mr. Baalu earlier told BBC Tamil service that the group was given unhindered access to IDP camps and was allowed to speak freely with them.

However, no opposition Sri Lanka parliamentarian is allowed to visit the camps despite repeated requests.

The delegation refused to comment on the conditions of the IDP camps in Vavuniya when questioned by the journalists as they arrived to meet Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasignhe on Wednesday.

Mano Ganeshan, MP, who met the delegation together with Mr. Wickramasinghe told media that the group was not a multi-party delegation but only consisted of ruling party MPs.

“We requested them to provide details of the camps as opposition MPs in Sri Lanka not allowed to visit the camps,” he said.
