Unrest in Menik Farm Camp
Sri Lanka Army says two people were injured in an incident in the Menik Farm Camp on Saturday. Wanni district member of parliament, Sivasakthi Anandan told BBC that according to information he received the incident had happened when some IDPs were trying to move from one camp to another. In response to a question posed by BBC Tamil Service why inmates had moved out desregarding instructions not to move from one camp to other, he said the inmates had gone to fetch firewood. He said the government was earlier giving them cooked food and this has been stopped since the 17th of this month. "The WFP is issuing only dry rations like rice, sugar, flour and dhal to the inmates. So the inmates are left with no alternative but to cook by themselves and eat. Hence, they essentially need firewood", MP Anandan said. All these issues, he said, have been brought to the attention of Resettlement and Disaster Management Minister Rishat Badurdeen and party leader R.Sampanthan.
No clash Army spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakakra said that security forces had tried to stop some people trying to escape from zone 1 to zone 2 area. "Then there had been a big gathering and a hand grenade was thrown at the sentry from the crowd. They were throwing stones. The sentry had fired in self-defence.", he said. Two injured people in the incident were admitted to hospital, he said. Nineteen people involved in leading this incident were taken into police custody for questioning, Brigadier Nanayakkara added
