Mine clearing machines acquired
Sri Lankan officials say they have imported new equipment from Slovakia to speed up mine clearing work in the war-affected northern zone. An official said the five (Bosena type) machines will help them to de-mine an area of up to five-thousand square metres a day. At the moment, mine clearing work is being done manually and only ten square metres are cleared daily by a single de-mining worker. The government says it needs to de-mine the former war zone before it can allow nearly 300,000 of displaced Tamil civilians to go back to their homes. The Sri Lankan army and eight other organisations have been involved in clearing landmines in the north. The military declared victory over Tamil Tiger rebels in May. | LOCAL LINKS UK grant to clear landmines 06 August, 2009 | Sandeshaya US travel advice dismissed30 June, 2009 | Sandeshaya Land mines kill wanni elephants07 February, 2006 | Sandeshaya
