Emergency extended to deal with underworld-PM

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka told parliament that the government is determined to take tough action against underworld gangs.

“Although the guns in the north were silenced there is still a need to silence the guns of the underworld” said Prime Minister Wickramanayaka while proposing to parliament the extension of emergency regulations for a month.

Emergency regulations were further extended with seventy one parliamentarians voting in favour.

Seven parliamentarians opposed the extension of emergency regulations.

Meanwhile, Mangala Samaraweera the leader of the SLFP (M) said that if the government wants to get rid of underworld gangs that could be done within the existing legal frame work.

He said that underworld gangs were used by the government to attack journalists and abduct civilians.

Samaraweera pointed out that several underworld characters who have been assassinated recently had been identified with killing squads associated with the government.

“There is speculation that these underworld characters are being assassinated to prevent such information leaking out said” Samaraweera.
