Tamilini has fled NFZ and surrendered to the authorities in May
A court in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, has allowed the police to further detain and question the leader of Tamil Tiger women’s political wing.

Colombo Chief Magisstrate Nishantha Hapuaarachchi who visited the headquarters of police Criminal Investigations Division (CID) on Wedneday has granted permission for police request to further detain Subramanium Sivagami, widely known as Thamilini.

The magistrate has visited the detainee on his powers under emergency regulations.

Thamilini who has fled the 'No Fire Zone' (NFZ) in the north and surrendered to the authorities in May, is since detained by the police.

Police told the magistrate that she is being investigated for being a member of a banned organisation, LTTE.

She has also trained under former LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham, police have told the visiting magistrate.

The magistrate has allowed the police to detain Thamilini until 28 August.

Some other senior LTTE members are also being detained and questioned by the authorities, according to media reports.

Sri Lankan authorities have detained five doctors, four of them government officials, who worked in the NFZ until the security forces defeated the LTTE on 18 May.
