EU calls for immediate ceasefire
European Parlimentarians
European Parlimentarians
Members of the European Parliament have adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire by the Sri Lankan army and the LTTE in order to allow the civilian population to leave the combat zone.

The Parliamentarians on Thursday condemned the LTTE’s violence and intimidation which are preventing civilians from leaving the conflict area.

Parliament also condemned attacks on civilians who are trapped in the battle zone.

The parliamentarians said that they were concerned about reports of serious overcrowding and poor conditions in the refugee camps established by the Sri Lankan Government.

European Parlimentarians have emphasized that both sides need to respect international humanitarian law and protect the civilian’s population in the combat zone, as well as in the safe zone.

The parliamentarians request that international and national humanitarian organisations, as well as journalists, be granted full and unhindered access to the combat zone and to refugee camps.
