People are constantly moving looking for safe areas
A School which was closed for 21 years due to war was reopened by the Eastern Province minister of Education while the Zonal education director reported to the UNICEF about imminent closure of schools in Killinochchi.

In the opening ceremony, Eastern Province Minister of education Wimalaweera Dissanayake said under the leadership of present president eastern province is taking all steps to develop education.

The school was named after president Mahinda Rajapaksha.

The Government Secretary of Ampara said Aranthalawa has seen so many deaths from the war so it is good news that we are focusing on its development.

Meanwhile education officials in Killinochchi appeal to the UNICEF to urge the government of Sri Lanka to declare safe areas for civilians in Wanni.

In a letter sent to the Head of UNICEF zonal office, the director of education in Killinochchi said that he humbly appeal “ to use the good office of the UNICEF to bring this human suffering to the authorities concerned and to relief the people from the terrible situation by way of declaring Vishwamadu to PTK as safe areas”.

The letter pointed out that people are constantly moving from their displaced places thus it is paramount to establish a safe passage to ensure the safety of the people.

According to the director schools are full of displaced, children and teachers are in make shift shelters all over from Vishwamadu to PTK area.

The letter claims that the promised safety area has not yet been declared and people are at the mercy of the fighting army.

Stop shelling

“A chain of vehicles tractors, carts and trucks with unimaginable load is moving slowly for the past week to find save areas for location” it added.

The letter asks the UNICEF to treat this as an emergency and request to give its fullest support to make the internally displaced people safe.

The director has also written to the Secretary of Education of Northern Province asking to inform the plight of the displaced people to relevant authorities and stop shelling the civilian targets.
