Kilinochchi is a town desolate with damaged buildings and rubble say journalists who visited the area on a conducted tour by the Sri Lankan military authorities.

AFP chief photographer Lakruwan Wanniarachchi who visited the area on Sunday said that artillery fire could be heard from far and near while they were there.

Journalists were flown to the air force base in Anuradhapura from Colombo and then by an MI 17 helicopter to Mankulam from where they were taken to Kilinochchi and Paranthan along the A 9 road.

Most of the buildings on either side of A 9 had been badly damaged by bombardments by both sides, he said.

Wanniarachchi said that he was able to see a huge burial ground maintained by the LTTE which was destroyed.

Among the buildings severely damaged is the LTTE Peace Secretariat, he added.
