Heavy clashes in the north
Map of Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan navy says it has sunk a Tamil Tiger rebel ship and four other smaller boats and killed at least twenty rebels in a major battle off the north-eastern coast.

A naval spokesperson said the rebel ship was carrying arms and other war materials for the rebels.

He added that the navy did not suffer any casualties. There's been no word from the rebels on the navy's version of events.

Meanwhile, the guerrillas said they had recaptured a section of a trench line from the army near the town of Kilinochchi.

The Sri Lankan army has mounted a big offensive aimed at capturing Kilinochchi, where the rebels have their administrative headquarters.
