No for military victory - Indian PM
Indian PM Manmohan Singh
Indian Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh says that India always believed that Sri Lanka does not call for a military victory but it called for a negotiated settlement which respects the unity and integrity of Sri Lanka.

After the third round of the IBSA summit held in Delhi, he told journalists that, however, India is concerned about the situation in Sri Lanka.

Cause for concern

“The situation in Sri Lanka remains a cause for serious concern for the government of India. We are concerned about the escalation of hostilities and also of the suffering of the civilian population”, he said.

Leaders from India, Brazil and South Africa held the third round of the IBSA summit in the Indian capital Delhi.

Brazil's president Lula de Silva and South African president Motlanthe were attending the summit.

The main focus of the summit was the global financial crisis. The three leaders of these emerging economic powers called on the rich countries of the world to listen to them before making any major decisions.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, however, has not responded to Tuesday's All Party meeting in Tamil Nadu which has called upon the Indian government to broker a ceasefire between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE within two weeks.

Congress Reaction

Commenting on the decision of the multi party meeting convened by the Tamilnadu government the ruling Congress Party spokesperson Abhisekh Singhvi said that matters of foreign relations is a subject to be dealt by the Federal Government and State governments should not dictate terms on the subject.

Another major political party and the main opposition party BJP has said that the unity of Sri Lanka is to be preserved.
