The Kilinochchi Medical Association representing the doctors from the Kilinochchi district has requested support from the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) to assist in handling the ‘humanitarian crisis in Wanni region’. The doctors say that the Kilinochchi General Hospital premises are hit by the shrapnel of aerial bombs and Glass windows of the intensive care unit smashed by the blast wave. In their statement the doctors say, “Most of the people are living in temporary shelters which are located in the paddy fields and flooding areas. As the monsoon season started already, we are receiving a huge numbers of babies with dysentery and gastro enteritis”. There have been proposals to move the part of the hospital to a Government school known as Visuvamadu Maha Vidyalayam. Currently at this school 100 displaced families are residing while eleven displaced schools are attached to this school. The Kilinochchi Medical Association says that displaced need to be resettled outside the school premises and the school needs to functions of these schools without interruption. A shortage of drugs has also been highlighted by the doctors. The doctors in Kilinochchi have requested the GMOA to visit the area. Upul Gunasekara, Assistant Secretary of the GMOA confirmed that he has received a request for support and the request will be discussed at an executive council meeting convened for Thursday. “Once civilians cross in to the government controlled area there is a plan to take care of them” said Dr Gunasekara | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
