SC orders probe against police
The Supreme Court in Sri Lankan has emphasised the importance of taking action against the police officers who file false charges against innocent citizens. Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva urged officials at the Attorney General (AG) department not to protect any such policemen. The CJ made the remarks as a petition by Lalith Rajapaksa against Kandana police was taken in for hearing. In his petition, Rajapaksa has accused Kandana police of trying to assassinate him. Don't trust police A counsel for the petitioner told the court that his client has filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition against a police a few years ago. A group of armed police officers have searched the petitioner’s house on 25 May, as the petitioner was away.
The state counsel said the police has visited the house to question Lalith Rajapaksa over a bicycle robbery. Noticing that it looks like the police have filed false charges against the petitioner, Justice Shirani Thilakawardene noted that the officers should be suspended and an investigation should be launched on the incident. She also urged the state counsel not to trust everything that police say. The AG was ordered to launch a special investigation into the police threatening the petitioner and report 21 October. | LOCAL LINKS Notice issued to defence secretary22 September, 2008 | Sandeshaya Negombo Police blamed on murder20 September, 2008 | Sandeshaya Monks 'protest' in Supreme Court05 September, 2008 | Sandeshaya IGP ordered to arrest Mervyn18 August, 2008 | Sandeshaya
