Envoys discuss Sri Lanka violence
The American assistant secretary of state for South Asian affairs, Richard Boucher
"Emphasis on protecting civilians" - Boucher
Envoys from the United States, the European Union, Japan and Norway have been meeting in New York to discuss the recent upsurge in violence in Sri Lanka between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels.

The American assistant secretary of state for South Asian affairs, Richard Boucher, said fighting in the north was increasing, and the envoys had put an emphasis on protecting civilians caught up in the conflict.

He said they'd also discussed the need for both sides in the conflict to make sure humanitarian deliveries could get through to those displaced by the violence.

An estimated two-hundred thousand people have been dispalced due to the escaling fighting.

He said discussions were taking place with both the government and the rebels.
