EU pressuring govt -JNP
European Union
European Union
The European Union (EU) is being accused of imposing conditions on Sri Lanka in a bid to destabilise the government.

Addressing a press briefing in Colombo the President of the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna Wimal weerawansa accused the EU of using tax concessions as an excuse to put pressure on the Government of Sri Lanka.

Weerawansa said that the EU has decided to look into the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Sri Lanka prior to extending GST plus concessions at a moment when its not suitable to do so.

“The EU as well as a number of its members have always proposed that the government should not to go to war." said parliamentarian
Wimal Weerawansa.

He pointed out that there is a conspiracy to bring in to power a government that would act as a puppet as opposed to the present government which has not agreed to this request.

Weerawansa said that “If Ranil Wickramasinha is brought into power he will happily agree”

Meeting Solheim

Commenting on the meeting between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Norwegian Minister of Environment and International Development Erik Solheim in New York Weerawansa said that this meeting has given undue recognition to Solheim who was the former negotiator of the failed peace talks between the government and LTTE.

“He is the one who pushed Sri Lanka in to the cease fire agreement and meeting him itself is a shame” added weerawansa
