Koneshwaram chief priest killed

Thirukoneswaram is one of the five temples devoted to Hindu deity Siva
The head priest of the historical Thirukoneswaram kovil has been shot dead in Trincomalee.

Journalists in Trincomalee told the BBC that Hindu Priest Sivaguruaja Kurukkal was shot in Vidyalan Road in Trincomalee on Sunday evening.

Sri Lanka militay authorities have accused the LTTE of killing the priest.

"The late priest was maintaining close relations with the Security Forces and Police," a statement issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

Thirukoneswaram is one of the five Eswarams - temples devoted to Hindu deity Siva.

Hindus as well as Buddhists visit the temple situated in a High Security Zone within the Fort Frederick built by the Dutch in the 17th centuy.
