South Asian nations, apart from Pakistan, have failed to impress in the Paralympics held in the Chinese capital, Beijing. Lankadeepa journalist Namal Pathirage told BBC Sandeshaya that only Pakistan managed to win a medal at the world's biggest sporting event for disabled sports personnel. All five Sri Lankans players have failed to qualify for the consecutive rounds in their respected fields. Lal Pushpakumara came tenth from 11 contestants in high jump event while Shantha Kumara who competed in 800m also failed to qualify for the second round on Sunday. Pushpakumara injured Chef de mission of the Sri Lankan team, Lt. Colonel Rajiv Wickramasinghe told BBC Sandeshaya that Udaya Pushpakumara will not take part in the long jump event on Tuesday due to an injury.
Upali Rajakaruna (Wheelchair Tennis), Sandun Wasana Perera (power lifting) and are the other two Sri Lankans among nearly 4000 sportsmen and women representing 148 countries. Four of the five Sri Lankan participants were made disabled while serving in Sri Lanka armed forces. The sports minister has intervened at the last moment as the Sri Lankan team struggled to find a sponsor for the team to arrive in China, Namal Pathirage said. Sri Lanka's bid to attend the Beijing event was initially in disarray as the body governing the disabled sports in the island is controlled by an interim administration, he added.
