UNP agrees for reforms
Tissa Attanayake, MP
UNP says the names for new senior positions were not recommended
The main opposition in Sri Lanka says the Working Committee (WC) agreed for 14 proposals to reform the party on Thursday.

United National Party (UNP) spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake told journalists in Colombo that there was no mention of changing the party leader in the WC meeting.

Five UNP parliamentarians have called on leader Ranil Wickramasinghe to resign and pave the way for a new leader but the spokesman says it was not raised in the WC meeting.

'Leadership crisis'

“The WC only discussed appointing a deputy leader and assistant leaders,” he said.

UNP General Secretary, Tissa Attanayake, told BBC Sandeshaya that the reforms agreed by the WC will be submitted to the party conference to be held in December.

The committee of senior party members that recommended the reforms have not commented on individuals to be appointed to the senior posts, he added.

Mr. Karunathilake, MP said the party decided to fill vacancies in the party hierarchy without delay.

The spokesman added that the reform proposals were unanimously approved by the WC on Thursday.
