The award was presented on stage by his captain Mahela Jayawardhana.

Mendis' endeavours in 2008 include taking six wickets for just 13 runs in the final of the 2008 Asian Cup, a tournament where he was also named Man of the Series after taking a total of 17 wickets.

The Spirit of Cricket award was won by the Sri Lankan team with their captain, Mahela Jayawardena, on hand to collect the trophy. Ajantha Mendis was chosen ahead of England's Stuart Broad.

"I am delighted to win the award. It is an honour to play for Sri Lanka and I hope to continue playing for my country for a long time to come."
