Minister Mervyn Silva surrendered to the court through his lawyers while
Journalists were protesting in front of the Fort Railway Station in Colombo against Police inaction.

The minister was accused of having assaulted and snatched cameras from a Sirasa TV crew at an official function early this month at Paliyagoada.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Tilakaratne ordered the IGP to arrest the suspects and produce them before the court.

The protesting journalist accused the Inspector General of Police, Jayantha Wickramaratna for acting in a biased manner as the police failed to carry out the court order.

Dr Mervyn Silva was granted on Rs. 50,000 surety and a Rs. 500,000 cash bail with a warning not to interfere with investigations.

The minister spoke angrily against the Sirasa journalists as he was leaving the court premises.
