India 'colonising' Sri Lanka
NFF leaders
NFF says India is trying to 'colonise' Lanka while supporting the war against LTTE
The breakaway group of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has accused India of trying to colonise Sri Lanka by forcing free trade partnerships.

The National Freedom Front (NFF) called for a parliamentary debate over the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Sri Lanka.

NFF president, Wimal Weerawansa, MP, said Sri Lanka’s giant neighbour is not only trying to control trade but also the service sector.

India 'supports war'

The pact would also allow Indian nationals to work in Sri Lanka’s service sector while Sri Lanka nationals struggling to find jobs, according to the NFF.

The president should not sign this pact without asking the owners –the public – if he still thinks he is only the guardian

There is no point of ‘liberating’ the north and east from the LTTE if the area to be handed over to India, Mr. Weerawansa added.

While supporting Sri Lankan government’s war strategy against the LTTE, he said, India is trying to ‘take ransom’ from Rajapaksa administration.

He accused the government of trying to sign the CEPA pact while Indian leaders in the country for the SAARC regional summit.

Mr. Weerawansa said President Rajapaksa who claimed to be the ‘guardian’ of Sri Lanka before presidential elections does not have a right to be the ‘owner’.

“The president should not sign this pact without asking the owners –the public – if he still thinks he is only the guardian,” the NFF leader who is a close confidante of the president said.

He called on the government to reveal the details of the pact to the parliament during the debate in late July.

The NFF made the scathing attack on India while a JVP delegation headed by Sunil Hannunneththi, MP, is touring China.

The JVP earlier accused India of trying to influence Rajapaksa administration to stop the war and find a political solution.

A group led by former JVP parliamentary group leader, Wimal Weerawansa, broke away from the party earlier this year.
