Mr. Perera's request to remove a judge has caused a controversy

A three-bench panel headed by Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva ruled on Thursday that Attorney-at-law Elmore Perera is guilty of violating lawyers' ethics.

Mr. Perera, who is also the chairman of the Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) of Sri Lanka, was accused by the Supreme Court judge, Shirani Thilakawardene of violating the ethics of his profession.

Failing to appoint CC

In a petition to the Supreme Court in 2006, Elmore Perera has sought a ruling against the president appointing independent commissions without making steps to appoint the Constitutional Council (CC).

He has objected to the presence of Ms. Thilakawardene in the panel hearing his petition.

Ms. Thilakwaradene has made a complaint to CJ Sarath Silva accusing Mr. Perera of violating lawyers’ code of conduct in his deliberations to the court seeking her removal from the panel.

After hearing the case for nearly two years, the Supreme Court ruled he was guilty of the charges.

When contacted by BBC Sandeshaya, Mr. Perera refused to comment.

His next course of action, Mr. Perera said, will be informed to the public very soon.
