SLBC chairman's speeches condemned
Journlaists protest in Colombo
Five media organisations have condemned an alleged threatening speeches by the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), Hudson Samarsinghe.

The speeches levelled against Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association (SWJA), Poddala Jayantha and BBC Sandesaya Correspondent, Elmo Fernando were broadcast over the private radio channel, ‘Isira’ of the TNL media group.

Inciting language

Smarasinghe had indirectly suggested in an inciting language that Poddala Jayantha should be assassinated, the media organizations say in a statement.

SLBC Chairman Samarasinghe in a hate language questing Poddala Jayantha’s knowledge of journalism has asked him not to make capital out of the war.

Warning Poddala Jayantha , he says, “Keep in mind. People will be watchful of you. Do not be traitors”

He has made this statement criticising an interview Poddala Jayantha had with the Lankadeepa newspaper, they said.

SLBC chairman, Hudson Samarasinghe has criticised BBC Sandesaya Correspondent, Elmo Fernando in the similar pattern.

Warning

He warns, “I am warning to BBC not to interfere in political affairs in the country. This is critical and keep in mind that this is the last warning. Elmo, I am telling you for the last time.

The media organizations say that these inciting speeches by the Head of a State Media Organisation take our memories to Ruwanda’s radio ‘Mille Collins’ which carried out hate propaganda.

“It is only fascism that will try to undermine the opposition views by threats and instigating hatred and not democracy. The speeches like this may lead to a dangerous trend in media”, media organisations said.

The media organisations warn that these hate speeches are all "extremely harmful to all humanitarian and democratic forces".
