Journalists are regularly threatened by politicians and officials
Media watchdogs in Sri Lanka say a freelance journalist was assaulted by supporters of a provincial councillor in the east.

The Free Media Movement (FMM) says journalist JL Jawfarkahn was assaulted in Batticaloa by supporters of MLAM Hisbullah.

The journalist has visited Mr. Hisbullah’s office in Batticaloa to get an interview, the FMM said.

Mr. Hisbullah told BBC Sandeshaya on Sunday that he would consult his electorate on future course of action after he was denied the Chief Minister (CM) post by the ruling coalition.

The United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) appointed the leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) as the CM in the east despite more Muslim councillors than Tamils were elected to the PC from the ruling coalition.
