Ms. Maheswari Velayudhan, an advisor to Minister Douglas Devananda, was shot dead in Karavetti, Jaffna on Tuesday evening, police said.

Ms. Velayudhan was on her way to see her mother as gunmen donning clothes similar to military uniform starting firing, Nelliadi police said.

A lawyer by profession, she was widely respected for working to protect human rights of Sri Lanka’s minority Tamil community before joining the government.

A spokesman for Ealam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP), Nelson Edirisinghe, told BBC Sandeshaya that the attack was carried out by the LTTE.

There was no response from the Tamil Tigers.
