The government says that despite suffering heavy casualties security forcers have been able to capture forward defence line territory in the North.

“When fighting terrorism you can’t always win” said Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.

The Sri Lankan Military said on Wednesday that it has captured 400 to 500 metres of L.T.T.E. area in Muhamalai , in the Jaffna peninsula.

The government has been regularly reporting considerable number of LTTE causalities and when questioned on the accuracy of figures Minister Rambukwella said that the government intelligence used multiple sources including the intercepton of rebel communications to verify LTTE causalities.

simplistic calculations

The government earlier estimated strength of the LTTE membership at three thousand fighters.

In contrast government figures released since January claim that 3, 125 LTTE fighters have been killed in action.

When questioned whether all LTTE fighters have been annihilated the minister 's response was that it's an assumption based on very simplistic calculations.

“Its unfortunate that these critics don't take in to account that the LTTE recruits aggressively” said Minister Rambukwella.

Asked whether LTTE has been able to recruit by the thousands within the last few months the minister said , “ no I don't say by the thousands, but they have even recruited children“.
