"Will kill thousands" SLA chief
The head of the Sri Lankan army says the military aims to kill three thousand Tamil Tiger rebels over the next six months.

Sarath Fonseka

The Army Commander, General Sarath Fonseka, told the state-run newspaper Sunday Observer that the military had set itself the target of killing at least ten rebels a day.

The statement came as the ministry of defence reported that thirty-three rebels died in a battle in northern Sri Lanka over the weekend.

However, the Tigers denied this, saying they had killed at least twenty soldiers. There's no independent confirmation of any of the figures.
