Militarisation has 'increased the use of violence against women'
Militarisation of the society and availability of fire arms have increased the use of violence against women says the International Organisation against all Forms of Racism (IOAAFR).

The women activists who convene to the Sri Lanka Foundation to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed two minutes silenced to remember the women who died from violence.

According to the chairman of the IOAAFR, Nimalka Fernando all forms of violence is used against women in Sri Lanka.

She alleged that the police is not conducting proper enquires in cases related to violence against women thus its not easy to identify the culprits.

Suffer from 'both parties'

“When we think about women who died due to violence and the steps taken to investigate those allegations we cannot satisfy” She said.

Speaking to Sandeshaya an activist from Jaffna said “women are helpless”.

“We live in a war zone and we suffer from both parties. When LTTE and Army attack each other it is the women who suffer the most”, she added.

Women who work in Katunayake Free Trade Zone should get a better treatment and recognition, pointed out an activist Dhammika Kapuge of Elpitiya.

Deserve 'better respect'

Dhammika’s friend, Chamila Dissanayake was murdered by a doctor at Negambo Hospital.

“We are treated like toys. That is why my friend faced with an unfortunate death”.

“Society should take action to prevent these things happen to us” Dhammika told Sandeshaya.

“We contribute to Sri Lankan economy and we deserve a better recognition and respect” she added.
