The Catholic Church has made representations to President Mahinda Rajapaksha on the plight of displaced persons living in the uncleared areas of the Mannar and Vauniya districts.

“We pointed out that nearly 20 thousand people living in these areas are living in fear for their lives as artillery exchange happens regularly" said Bishiop Rayappu Joseph.

The delegation requested the president to make arrangements to move these displaced people to a safer location.

The Catholic Church has urged the government and the LTTE to declare the surroundings of Mdhu church a neutral zone.

President Rajapaksha has promised the delegation that he will look in to the request and take whatever possible steps to provide relief to the displaced.

Meanwhile S. P Tamilselvan, leader of the political wing has informed the church that if the government is willing to give a written undertaking to treat the Madhu Church area as a neutral zone it will abide by the agreement said Bishop Rayappu Joseph.
