Sri Lanka Freedom Party (People’s Wing) coordinator Sripathi Sooriarachchi proposed the appointment of a select committee to inquire into the secret deal said to have taken place in 2005 before the presidential election.

The allegation is that the LTTE had been given Rs.200 million before the presidential elections.

The Leader of the House, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that a select committee has to be appointed to look into all the dealings with the LTTE since 1989.

The speaker, W.J.M.Lokubandara ruled that the proposal by the MP Sripathi Sooriarachchi be debated as scheduled.

Former Minister Mangala Samaraweera of the Sri Lanka Freedom party (People's Wing) at the outset of the debate said that he wanted make clear that the new parliamentarian, Basil Rajapakse, Sripathi Sooriarachchi, Tiran Alles and himself were present at the first meeting with the LTTE regarding the deal.

MP Basil Rajapakse who rose at this point of time interrupted MP Mangala Samaraweera's speech and said that he did not take part in any such a discussion.

The Parliament then became noisy and was inundated with verbal attacks by both the government and opposition members.
