'Do not transfer' Tamil suspects
The Supreme Court in Sri Lanka have ordered police to produce Tamil Tiger suspects before local courts than transferring them to the capital. The Chief Justice (CJ) made the order after considering a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by six LTTE suspects arrested in Muttur, Trincomalee. The suspects, arrested under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), have argued that they faced hardships as a result of transferring them to Colombo. The authorities should not create "unnecessary problems" by bringing them to the capital, CJ Sarath Silva said. The Attorney General was ordered to produce a report on how many suspects already been transferred from Trincomalee. The hearing was postponed until 23 July.
