There is no imminent danger to the life of teenage Sri Lankan girl in death row in Saudi Arabia, authorities said. Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Bahila told BBC Sandeshaya that Sri Lanka government has filed an appeal against the death sentence on Saturday. "I can assure you that there is no imminent danger to Rizana's life as now it is before the Appeals Court," the minister said. Rizana Nafeek, a nineteen year old Sri Lankan house maid, was convicted of strangling a four month old infant in Saudi Arabia. She was then sentenced a death penalty of beheading according to the Saudi Arabian High Court. Any objection against the conviction was to be filed before Monday, 16 July. The Sri Lankan girl, then seventeen years old, went to Saudi Arabia on the 1st of May with high hopes of earning a living in order to help her family who were living in poverty.
She was still a schoolgirl studying at Sapi Nagar School. Her first thoughts at her tender age were a nice house and a good education for her family. Sri Lankan ambassador in Saudi Arabia, Adam AJ Sadiq, told bbcsinhala.com that a representative from Kateb Fahad Al-Shammari law firm filed the preliminary objection against the death sentence imposed on Rizana. He assured that the Riyadh embassy "will continue to pursue all possible avenues to save her life". | LOCAL LINKS Rizana: Have your say11 July, 2007 | Highlights Deadline closes on Rizana's appeal09 July, 2007 | Sandeshaya Family weeps for youngster in Saudi04 July, 2007 | Sandeshaya "Appeal has to be done soon"03 July, 2007 | Sandeshaya | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
