Britain withholds Sri Lanka aid

The British government says it is withholding millions of dollars worth of aid to Sri Lanka until the island's government meets agreed human rights conditions.

Sri Lankan government troops and the rebel Tamil Tigers have repeatedly violated a ceasefire agreement they signed in 2002, ignoring pleas from the international community.

Britain says it was due to make a payment of around six-million dollars in aid to Sri Lanka this year, and has paid just half.

A spokesman for the British High commission in Colombo said the remaining money would be paid only when Britain was satisfied that the previously agreed conditions had been met.
