A court in Sri Lanka has sentenced the former head of the cricket board, Thilanga Sumathipala, to two years in prison for violating the country's immigration laws.

Mr Sumathipala was charged with altering a passport to allow an alleged gangster, Dhammika Amarasinghe, to attend the 1999 Cricket World Cup in England.

He was also fined 50,000 rupees by Colombo additional magistrate Ajith Anavaratne.

He has been released on bail pending an appeal.

Mr Sumathipala has denied any involvement with Mr Amarasinghe.
