Mawbima journalist released
Sri Lanka's Supreme Court ordered authorities to release a woman journalist who has been detained for months under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). Mawbima journalist Munusamy Parashwaree was arrested in November, last year and detained under an order by Defence secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. She was not charged of any offence. Three-judge bench presided by Judge Nihal Jayasinghe ordered her release after Attorney General informed the judiciary that they have not gathered sufficient evidence to charge her. The court was informed of AG's decision as a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by Parameshwaree was taken for consideration. The court postponed ruling on whether to hear the FR petition to 30 March. Journalist gathered at Colombo magistrates courts until 1600 SLT on Wednesday but Parameshwaree was not brought before magistrates court until that time, a Mawbima journalist told BBC Sandeshaya. She is still in custody until magistrates court orders her release.
