JVP warns Mahinda on crossover
JVP and Rajapaksa signed an MoU in 2005
Rajapaksa agreed to 'revise' CFA and 'reconsider' Norway as peace facilitators
President Mahinda Rajapaksa's political ally has warned of "severe consequences" if he moves away from mutually agreed policies.

The Peoples Liberation Front (JVP) warned that they would not hesitate to agitate against the President "at the very moment" he skips "Mahinda Chinthana".

JVP parliamentarian Vijitha Herath was commenting on the proposed crossover by leading members of the main opposition, United National Party (UNP).

JVP-Rajapaksa MoU

"It is clear that this crossover is not aimed at safeguarding Mahinda Chinthana," Herath told BBC Sandeshaya.

Dissidents from United National Party (UNP) say nearly 20 of them are joining the government on Sunday.

The JVP supported Rajapaksa at the November 2005 presidential elections.

Rajapaksa signed a Memorandums of Understading (MoU) with JVP and Buddhist monk-led Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) before the elections.

UNP peace negotiators

He agreed to "revise fully" the truce signed with the Tamil Tigers and "reconsider seriously" Norway as Sri Lanka's peace facilitators, if elected as the Head of State.

However, the government negotiating team repeatedly pledged to abide by the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA), in two rounds of talks held with the LTTE in Geneva.

The former cultural affairs minister, Vijitha Herath, says leading peace negotiators of the former UNP administration may not promote their agreed policy, Mahinda Chinthana.

"GL Peiris is the one who introduced federal solution: Milinda Moragoda is one who preaches privatisation," he told bbcsinhala.com.
