Landslides in N'Eliya kill 17
Seventeen people were killed in central Sri Lanka Friday in landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains, relief officials said.

The National Disaster Management Centre said two people were buried alive in a mudslide at Walapane while another was killed in Meepe.

Roads impassable due to landslides

Thirteen killed in Walapone and four in Hanguranketha in Nuwara Eliya districts when unstable mountain slopes crashed on several homes.

"Over 45,000 are displaced in Nuwaraeliya District." the Superintendent Of Police of Nuwaraeliya Deshabandu Tennakone told Nuwar Eliya Sirasa correspondent, Ranjith Rajapakse.

"Big blast"

"Airforce helicopters and the Army is deployed to help the victims",said the police.

An eyewitness in Mathurata said, "It rained for two days without a breakand last night we heard a huge noice like a blast. We ran as fast as we could. Then we were hit with mud and rubble. I saw four houses being buried. Four of our neighbours perished."

A total of 61,281 people were driven out of their flooded homes in the South said the disaster management centre.

Heavy rains have displaced over 8000 families in Ampara district. Pothuvil and Lahugala areas are the most affected.
