Annan appeals for peace in Sri Lanka
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan
The Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, says he is increasingly disturbed by the mounting civilian casualties in the continuing fighting between Sri Lankan government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels.

A UN spokesman said that Mr Annan was worried about the increasing loss of life.

He stressed the urgent need to bring the spiral of violence to an end, and called on the parties concerned to make every effort to return to the peace process as soon as possible.

On Friday, unidentified gunmen shot dead a pro-Tamil legislator, Nadarajah Raviraj, in Colombo.

Earlier, Tamil rebels and Sri Lanka's navy fought a fierce sea battle.
