Five people were gunned down and one person injured in a spate of gun attacks in Vavuniya on Thursday, police said.

Among the dead is an EPDP member who was shot by unidentified gunmen.

Police say another EPDP member suffered injuries as a result of an attack.

Meanwhile, police investigations into three dead bodies discovered in Vavuniya on Thursday morning have revealed that the deceased were Sinhala men.

Police say these men had come to the area to do carpentry work at a local medical centre and have been gunned down with their hands tied at the back.

Police say all killings were carried out by Tamil Tiger rebels.

But the Vavuniya district court judge who conducted the initial investigations said the gunmen could not be arrested due to the failures on the part of the police and security forces.
