Muttur IDPs waiting for 'peace'

“If we go home now, how can we come back if the fighting erupt again?” questions Sinnathamby Jayarani, a single mother.

A resident of Periyapalama, she said her husband, an activist of a PLOTE Tamil militant organisation opposed to Tamil Tigers, disappeared nearly four years ago.

Refugees refuse to leave camps until their safety is guaranteed

Many displaced from Mutur are refusing to leave the camps until proper measures are taken to guarantee their safety.

Internally Displaced People (IDP) in Trincomalee camp say they do not want to go back as fighting between the government forces and the Tamil Tigers hasn’t stopped.

The IDPs are camping in Trincomalee Hindu Cultural Centre and 11 other government schools.

The IDPs have left their homes in Mutur, both in the government-controlled areas as well as rebel-held territory.

A refugee who did not want to be identified told the BBC that he could go back only if the government provide them proper security.

There are 321 IDPs in Konneshwaram School. Teachers are struggling to continue with childrens’ studies.

Pakyarasa Anurodhanee, year 10 student, has recently lost her police officer father in a shell attack.

She was still waiting, she said, for school uniform promised by a certain organisation.

The refugees were also angry about the parliamentarians said to be representing them in the region.

22 parliamentarians were elected from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).

“What is the use of the MPs if they cannot help us at this moment of need?” angry refugees questioned.
