Aid prevented 'due to road closure'
Aid agencies in northern Sri Lanka say that the closure of a main road to the north was preventing much-needed aid reaching Jaffna peninsula. Vavuniya district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP Sivanathan Kishore told the BBC that in the next two days situation might also worsen in Vavunia area. “Normally 75-80 Lorries pass through these check points to the uncleared areas and Jaffna. Now the road has been closed for 7 days. Because of that there will be one or two-days food shortage,” he told bbcsinhala.com. When asked what is being done to help the situation Kishore said until now no negotiations have taken place between the government and the LTTE. Shipments sent But the government minister in charge of supplies says the shipments to be sent immediately to supply food and other necessary items to the affected. He said the Jaffna District Secretary K Ganesh has requested the government to supply dry ratios to Jaffna as soon as possible. “We expect Ruhunu ship to leave Colombo port by tomorrow morning with dry ratios and medical equipment,” minister for Disaster Management Amir Ali told BBC Sandeshaya. He said the shipments will reach Jaffna as well as Tamil Tiger held areas on the supervision of Sri Lanka Red Cross. The government earlier said it would open the access road to Kilinochchi for two hours.
