Lanka 'on course' for 8% growth
Authorities in Sri Lanka say the country is on course to record an eight percent economic growth despite fears of a resumption of civil war. Secretary to the Plan Implementation Ministry, Ajith Nivad Cabraal, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa led government has re-launched many macro projects that have been abandoned by previous administrations. “The government re-launched projects such as Katunayake expressway & Norochcholai during the first quarter,” he told bbcsinhala.com. He predicted the growth would be sustainable despite the war fears and oil price hikes. Sri Lanka has recorded a 7 percent growth in the first quarter and an 8.1 percent growth in the second, he said. The main opposition, United National Party (UNP) has accused the government of increasing the inflation by regularly printing new bank notes. But Cabraal, who takes over as the new governor of the Central Bank on Saturday, said the opposition cannot change the facts. “And yes we have to maintain all macro economic factors so that the inflation can be controlled,” Cabraal told BBC Sandeshaya.
