The government in Sri Lanka says it has no plans to bring in new legislations on conscription. Chief Government Whip Jeyararaj Fernandopullai told BBC Sandeshaya that the cabinet of ministers has never discussed any such plans. Responding to media reports that the United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Government is also planning to introduce a US-style “Patriotic Act”, the minister reiterated that conscription was never on the government agenda. “I have never heard of anything like that. Nothing of that sort was discussed in the cabinet or the parliament,” he told bbcsinhala.com. “And we will never agree to any proposal to introduce conscription”.
