Child actor 'avoids questioning'
The courts in Sri Lanka have ordered the mother of a child actor to produce him before courts to question whether he was abused while shooting a Sinhala film. Colombo magistrate Sarojinee Kusala Weerawardhana issued notice to Siththi Sangitha Samsudeen to produce 14 year old Mohamed Samsudeen on 10 May. The Children’s and Women’s affairs section of the police in a report to the court has informed that the child failed to appear before them despite repeated requests. A nude scene of the child in Ashoka Handagama’s “Aksharaya” (Letter of Fire) Sinhala film has created controversy in Sri Lanka. Cultural Affairs Minister, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhana, earlier told BBC Sandeshaya that he would not allow public screening of “Aksharaya” in Sri Lanka. The police alleged that the mother does not support their investigations into whether a child abuse has been occurred while filming “Aksharaya”. Police have started an investigation after receiving an anonymous complaint into the matter. The magistrate on Tuesday ordered the Film Corporation to hand over a copy of “Samanala Thatu”, to investigate whether a 12-year actor was abused while shooting it. | LOCAL LINKS Film accused of child abuse02 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya
