Bogollagama in Trincomalee with Armed Service Commnaders

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s special envoy, Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, warned of ‘severe consequences’ if the law enforcing authorities fail to take action against looters and troublemakers.

There have been reports of looting after more than 14 dead and 40 injured in a series of blasts in Trincomalee.

Minister Bogollagama is accompanied by Armed Force Commanders, North East Provincial Governor General Ashoka Jayawardhana and North Central Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake.

Curfew imposed

DIG Rohan Abeywardhana told BBC Sandeshaya that the town was calm after the police imposed curfew.

Angry crowds have set fire to shops and cars after the blast in Trincomalee Central Road.

Eyewitness Saman Mallawaarachchi, Trincomalee Divaina correspondent, told bbcsinhala.com that he saw a several bodies scattered in the street.

Crowds set fire to more than 10 shops along the Central Road and smokes were coming out from burning shops, Mallawarachchi added.

He said the city was tense as crowds were gathering in search of their relatives.

Earlier, two policemen were killed and two hurt in a blast near the port.

Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe told bbcsinhala.com that the Tamil Tigers have aimed a claymore bomb at a Sri Lanka Army base in the town.

Four security personnel were killed in the blasts, he added.

It was the latest suspected rebel attack on security forces since Monday, in which 20 people have died and comes ahead of talks aimed at saving a truce.
